HOW MUCH ROOM DO I NEED FOR A GARAGE GYM?

To be able to accommodate a garage gym at home, you’ll need to make sure you have enough space for the power rack or bench, as well as the 7ft weight bar. You will also want a little bit of room around the equipment to make sure you can load your weights on and off as well as enough headroom to use any pull up bars.

WHAT ELSE WILL I NEED FOR MY HOME GYM?

It isn’t just the workout equipment; you will also need to consider other factors too.
• Flooring – Rubber matting is excellent for protecting both floors and equipment, as well as deadening sounds and providing insulation from cold concrete.
• Decoration – Good lighting and motivational posters or wall flags to keep you going when it gets tough.
• Extras – It is your space, so it needs to be comfortable and convenient. Don’t forget accessories like gym timers or even a small fridge for those mid-workout drinks.
• Storage – Keep your workout area tidy, don’t neglect the need to have a place to put everything when it isn’t being used. Bar racks and plate storage are a must for a well-designed home gym.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I WORK OUT?

How often you train will usually depend on what your goals are. However, it’s always good to keep an eye on what you’re doing to make sure you don’t overdo it.
For most people, training 3-5 times a week is enough to get everything done while giving your body enough rest to recover.
You want to split your training out so that you’re targeting different areas in each session. Aim to work each individual area twice a week if you can. And make sure you have worked all of your main muscle groups each week.*
*Do not train if you’re injured. We recommend consulting a doctor or a fully trained physiotherapist for advice before undertaking a new training regime.

HOW MUCH WEIGHT SHOULD I BE USING?

Knowing how much weight you should be lifting comes with practice and experience.
If you’re just starting out, you’ll need to find out exactly where you’re at with each exercise, so you can make a note of how much you can lift.
The key figure you really want to find out is how much your one-rep max is. Once you know that, you can work out what you should be lifting.
Your one-rep max is the highest amount you can lift for any particular exercise. And it’s literally just one rep so after you have lifted the weight once, you can’t do anymore without a rest.

In short:
Lifting a higher amount of weight (80-90% of your one-rep max) while doing fewer reps (around 3-6), will help your muscles to get bigger.
Lifting a slightly lighter amount of weight (around 70% of your one-rep max) and doing more reps (around 8-12) will help your muscles get stronger.
Lower the amount even more (around 50-60%) and take the reps up to around 20 per set for endurance training.
You want to include all of these types in your training and cycling through each type is the most natural way to build strength and increase your one-rep max over time.
