Bicep curl using a Mirafit Revolving Curl Bar Attachment

The Curl Bar Cable Attachment can be used for various upper body exercises. The ez bar shape allows your wrist to move, providing more comfort on the hands and wrists. This is why an ez bar is primarily used for bicep curl variations, reducing the pressure placed on the joints in the upper body.

In this blog, we’re going to break down the different curl bar attachments and the benefits of using both a wide and narrow grip when performing exercises.

What is the Difference Between a Dual Cable and a Rotating EZ Bar?

The Dual Cable EZ Curl Bar attaches to a functional trainer using two eyelets. This allows for more stability and control when performing the exercises. The eyelets rotate independently, making the exercise smoother. Having two attachment points and more stability means you are able to lift heavier weights.

The single eyelet Rotating Curl Bar keeps the hands in a fixed position, but allows wrist rotation. The rotating mechanism reduces the amount of strain placed on the wrists and elbows.

Should You Use a Rubber or Knurled Grip on a Curl Bar?

Rubber grips provide additional comfort when performing exercises with the curl bar. A more comfortable grip is useful for a higher rep range as you’re able to hold the bar for longer. On the other hand, knurling is great for developing stronger grip strength and lifting heavier weights, but can become uncomfortable if held for long periods of time.

What Grip Width Should You Use on a Curl Bar Attachment?

Underhand narrow grip - This grip places more emphasis on the short head of the bicep muscles and is best for bicep curls and underhand lat pulldowns.

Overhand narrow grip - With an overhand grip there is more focus on the forearms and brachialis muscles. It can be used to perform reverse curls and overhand tricep pushdowns.

Underhand wide grip - The wide grip allows for a better stretch on the bicep muscles by increasing the range of motion. It’s great for wide grip bicep curls and underhand rows.

Overhand wide grip - A wide overhand grip works for tricep and back focussed movements. For overhead tricep pushdowns, the wide grip places greater emphasis on the lateral head of the triceps. A reverse grip row targets the upper back and traps.

The curl bar is one of the most versatile attachments that can be used on a cable machine or functional trainer. Taking inspiration from an Ez curl bar, it’s great for anyone who struggles with wrist pain and discomfort when performing upper body exercises. Check out our full range of Cable Attachments.
