What Equipment Do You Need for a Home Gym?
Whilst the equipment you will need depends on your training goals, you will want to consider
- Power rack – A versatile piece of equipment used for multiple exercises including squats and bench pressing. The spotters allow for heavier and safer training when lifting alone.
- Weight bench – gives you a sturdy surface on which to bench press and perform other prone exercises. Will often be used placed within the power rack. Consider if you need a flat bench or an adjustable one which can incline or decline.
- Barbell – a bar that you load individual plates on to. Used in squatting, bench pressing and bent over rows, as well as many other exercises. Comes in a variety of lengths and weights, so check the space you have available. You can also try our Barbell Recommendation Quiz
- Plates – the weighted discs that load on to a barbell. These can be bumper plates, which are typically rubber, or cast-iron plates, although other options are available.
- Dumbbells / kettlebells – Free weights that are used outside of the power rack and come in a variety of styles and weights. They can be used for compound movements or used to work a single muscle group.
- Cardio – Ideal for weight loss, calorie burning and improving cardiovascular fitness.
What else do I need to consider in my gym space?
Some garage gyms have limited head height; this will affect your ability to fit in some of the power racks or can make pull up bars difficult to use. In these situations, look out for short power racks or squat racks instead.
Flooring is also important. The correct rubber matting will protect your floor and your equipment whilst giving your space a professional look.
The equipment required for your home gym will depend on your goals. However, a power rack, weight bench, barbell, plates and some free weights would be required for starters for a well-stocked home gym alongside a cardio machine.
Kettlebells and dumbbells can be easily stored away within existing rooms and can take up very little space. For a dedicated gym area with a power rack set up in it, we would recommend a space at least 3m x 3m in order for you to be able to fit the equipment in and have adequate workout room and storage.
What is included in a home gym package?
A home gym package can include a combination of equipment such as a power rack or squat rack, weight bench, Olympic barbell, weight plates, dumbbells, storage and gym flooring. The exact contents vary by package, from beginner setups to complete garage gym systems.
How much space do I need for a home gym package?
The space needed depends on the equipment included. A compact setup with a bench and dumbbells can fit in a spare room, while a full power rack package may require garage space with enough room for lifting, movement and storage. Always check product dimensions and allow extra clearance around equipment.
Which home gym package is best for beginners?
Beginners often benefit from packages that include core strength equipment such as a bench, barbell and weight plates. Starter packages like our M1 Weight Lifting Starter Set can help you train all major muscle groups without needing to buy equipment separately.
Is buying a home gym package cheaper than buying equipment separately?
Home gym packages can often provide better value than purchasing individual pieces of equipment separately. They also help ensure the equipment works together and reduce the time spent researching compatible items.
Which home gym package is best for strength training?
For strength training, many people choose packages with a power rack, Olympic barbell, weight plates and an adjustable bench. This type of setup supports exercises such as squats, bench presses, deadlifts and overhead presses.
What exercises can I do with a home gym package?
Depending on the package, you can perform compound exercises including squats, bench presses, rows, deadlifts, pull ups and shoulder presses, as well as accessory exercises for arms, core and conditioning.
How do I choose the right home gym package?
Consider your training goals, available space, budget, experience level and future upgrades you might want. For more details, check out our blogs on How to Build a Home Gym - Planning and Buying Kit.
Can I upgrade my home gym package later?
Many setups can be expanded over time, especially racks with extra attachments, plates, storage, cable systems and accessories.
What flooring should I use under home gym equipment?
Rubber gym flooring is one of the most popular choices for home gyms because it helps protect floors, reduce noise and improve stability during workouts. Rubber mats or tiles are especially useful under power racks, benches and free weights, as they can absorb impact from dropped weights and help create a safer training area. The best flooring option depends on your setup, available space and the type of exercises you plan to do.
Do I need a power rack for a home gym?
No, but power racks provide versatility and can support safer solo training for exercises like squats and bench presses.
Can I build a home gym in a garage?
Yes, a garage can be an excellent space for a home gym because it often provides enough room for larger equipment such as power racks, benches and weight storage. Before setting up a garage gym, consider factors such as ceiling height, flooring, ventilation and temperature. Adding suitable gym flooring can help protect the floor and create a more stable training area, while planning enough space around equipment helps improve safety and comfort during workouts. Are home gym packages suitable for small spaces?
Yes, compact packages with folding benches, dumbbells or squat stands can work well in spare rooms and smaller training areas.
