More travellers are choosing active breaks that allow them to stay fit while exploring new destinations, and running has quickly become one of the easiest ways to do it. With little more than a pair of trainers and a good route, runners can experience a city from an entirely different perspective, and much quicker, too!

Interest in this type of fitness-focused travel is rising rapidly. In fact, Google searches for “running holiday” have increased by 248% over the past twelve months, highlighting the growing popularity of the runcation trend.

Across Europe, cities are becoming increasingly appealing for runners, offering well-maintained green spaces, dedicated running routes, and environments that make outdoor training both enjoyable and accessible.

For many runners, planning a trip now means researching not just landmarks and restaurants, but also the best parks, trails, and waterfront paths to run.

But with so many incredible destinations to choose from, which European city truly offers the best overall experience for a running getaway?

To find out, we at Mirafit analysed European capital cities across four key metrics: number of green spaces, number of running routes, average air quality score, and average spring temperature (°C), revealing the top destinations for your next runcation.

So, without further ado, let's find out where Europe's best runcation destinations are!

1 - Lisbon, Portugal

Taking the top spot as Europe's ultimate runcation destination is Lisbon, Portugal, scoring an impressive 180 out of 200 points. With 175 running routes and 106 green spaces to explore, runners are truly spoilt for choice. From riverside paths tracing the banks of the Tagus to hilly trails weaving through the city's iconic neighbourhoods, there’s plenty of pavement to pound.

What makes Lisbon particularly appealing, however, is the quality of the environment you'll be running through. An average air quality score of just 26 means clean, fresh air throughout your training, while an average spring temperature of 15.6°C provides the mild, comfortable conditions that are perfect for hitting the pavement without overheating.

2 - Madrid, Spain

Coming in at a close second is the Spanish capital, Madrid, scoring 178 out of 200. Boasting the highest number of green spaces in our ranking at 135, the city is a runner's paradise, with vast parks like Casa de Campo and Retiro Park offering sprawling, traffic-free routes perfect for long-distance training or a leisurely morning jog.

Madrid also impresses on the environmental front, recording an average air quality score of just 16, one of the cleanest in our entire index. Combine that with an average spring temperature of 12.6°C and 113 running routes winding through the city, and it's clear that Madrid offers a fantastic all-round runcation experience for runners of any level.

3 - London, UK

Claiming third place is one of Europe's most iconic cities, London, with an impressive 171 out of 200 points. The British capital leads the study in two key areas, with over 500 running routes (the most of any city in our ranking) and a staggering 395 green spaces. Explore the city, including the sweeping open expanses of Hyde Park to the leafy trails of Hampstead Heath. There is truly no shortage of places to run.

Where London falls slightly short, however, is in air quality, with an average score of 72 reflecting its bustling urban nature. With an average spring temperature of 11°C, conditions are on the cooler side too. That said, for sheer variety of routes and green space alone, London remains an exceptional destination for any runner looking to take their training to the next level.

4 - Rome, Italy

Taking fourth place is the Eternal City, Rome, scoring 169 out of 200. With 206 green spaces, runners have plenty of room to breathe between sessions, whether that's recovering in one of the city's many iconic parks or exploring its quieter, shaded corners away from the tourist trails. The Villa Borghese gardens alone offer a beautiful and expansive setting for an easy recovery run after a harder day of training.

With an average air quality score of 30 and a pleasant spring temperature of 14°C, conditions are well-suited to outdoor running throughout the season. The city's 59 running routes may be fewer than some of its rivals, but with ancient aqueducts, cobbled piazzas, and riverside paths along the Tiber to discover, every run in Rome feels like a journey through history, making it a truly unique runcation experience.

5 - Brussels, Belgium

Rounding out the top five is Brussels, Belgium, with a score of 164 out of 200. While the Belgian capital may not be the first city that springs to mind for a runcation, its 162 running routes offer plenty of variety for visitors. With an average air quality score of 13 and an average spring temperature of 10°C, Brussels offers crisp, clean air and cool running conditions that many athletes actively seek out for training. Claiming sixth place is Budapest, Hungary, with a score of 163 out of 200. The Hungarian capital impresses with 249 running routes, the second highest in our ranking, offering everything from flat riverside paths along the Danube to more challenging trails climbing through the Buda Hills on the western bank of the city.

With 118 green spaces complementing that extensive route network, there's plenty of opportunity to build out a varied training schedule over the course of a stay. An average spring temperature of 11.6°C makes for comfortable running conditions, and while the city's air quality score of 77 is something to bear in mind, Budapest's sheer variety of terrain and stunning riverside scenery make it a compelling destination for fitness-focused travellers.

6 (Joint) - Oslo, Norway

Joint sixth place goes to Oslo, Norway, which also scored 163 out of 200. The Norwegian capital is a city built for outdoor activity, and its 136 running routes reflect that, taking runners through dense forest trails in the Nordmarka, along the scenic Oslofjord waterfront, and through a network of well-maintained urban paths that make the city exceptionally easy to navigate on foot.

With an average air quality score of 18 and 89 green spaces across the city, Oslo offers a clean, refreshing environment for training. The average spring temperature of 8°C makes it one of the cooler destinations in our ranking, so packing an appropriate kit is a must. However, for runners who thrive in brisk conditions, Oslo's crisp Nordic air and stunning natural surroundings make it a hugely rewarding destination for a running holiday.

8 (Joint) - Paris, France

Taking eighth place is the French capital, Paris, with a score of 160 out of 200. The city is exceptionally well-served with green space, with 362 scattered throughout, providing runners with a variety of iconic settings to train in, from the manicured paths of the Tuileries Garden to the expansive trails that wind through the Bois de Boulogne on the city's western edge.

With an average spring temperature of 11°C and an air quality score of 48, Paris offers reasonable conditions for outdoor running throughout the season. The city's 59 running routes are on the lower side but given the sheer density of green space on offer, runners are unlikely to find themselves short of somewhere new to explore, with a different park, garden, or riverside path around every corner.

8 (Joint) - Berlin, Germany

Joining Paris with an equal score of 160 out of 200 is Berlin, Germany. The German capital offers a compelling mix of urban and natural running environments, with 209 green spaces providing plenty of variety. The vast Tiergarten park at the heart of the city and the tranquil forested trails surrounding the Grunewald lake on its outskirts are just two highlights.

With an average air quality score of 34 and spring temperatures of 10°C, Berlin offers fresh, cool conditions well-suited to consistent training. It's 80 running routes may be modest in number, but the city's flat terrain and wide, tree-lined paths make it a highly accessible destination for runners of all abilities. What Are the Benefits of Strength Training for Runners?

Mark Harris, Fitness Expert here at Mirafit, said:

“Running performance isn't built on miles alone; the athletes who make the biggest gains are often those who complement their training with targeted strength work. Exercises like squats, deadlifts, and single-leg movements build the muscular foundation that makes every stride more powerful and efficient, while also significantly reducing the risk of common running injuries. If you're planning a runcation and want to make the most of every run, incorporating strength training into your routine before you travel could make a real difference to how you feel on the road.

“Utilising key strength training equipment, such as barbells, resistance bands, and kettlebells, allows runners to target the specific muscle groups that matter most, from glutes and hamstrings to core stability. Even dedicating two sessions a week to structured strength training can yield noticeable improvements in your running economy, helping you go further, faster, and with less fatigue when you're out exploring a new city on your runcation”

How Can Weighted Vests Level Up Your Running Results?

Sprinting with a Mirafit Tactical Weight Vest

“Weighted vests are one of the most effective yet underutilised tools in a runner's training arsenal. By adding controlled resistance to your runs, your body is forced to work harder with every stride, building strength, improving cardiovascular fitness, and increasing calorie burn without changing your route or extending your session. Over time, when you remove the vest and run unloaded, you'll notice a significant improvement in your speed and endurance.

“Products like the Adjustable Weighted Vest are ideal for long-term progress, allowing you to incrementally increase the load as your fitness improves, meaning the challenge always scales with your ability. Whether you're training at home ahead of your runcation or want to add an extra dimension to your runs abroad, a weighted vest is a simple but highly effective investment in your performance.”

Methodology

The Best Destinations for a Runcation index, created by us at Mirafit, assesses a range of factors to highlight the top European cities for running-focused travel.

We examined four key metrics: the number of green spaces in each city, the number of available running routes, the average air quality score, and the average spring temperature (°C).

The number of green spaces was sourced from TripAdvisor, while the number of running routes was obtained from AllTrails. Additionally, WeatherSpark was used to source the average spring temperature.

Finally, the air quality score was sourced from AQICN, with lower scores indicating cleaner air and lower pollution levels, making it more favourable for overall health and outdoor activity. Source: Google Trends.
