How to Box Jump

A box jump is an explosive exercise where you jump from a quarter squat position onto a raised surface, usually a Plyo Jump Box. It’s a great movement, but it’s feared by many. They are a plyometric movement that help to develop speed and strength in the lower body. In particular, they work the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes and calves.

Many athletes that work in power-based sports perform plyometrics, but they are useful for everyday people too. Plyometrics load the knee and ankle joints which can be weak spots for many people. Training these areas is essential for runners looking to improve their running performance, or even older adults that need to build strength around their joints to prevent injury when falling.

If you want to include some plyometric movements into your training, here's a breakdown on how to box jump -

• To start, choose a box height that you feel comfortable with. It’s best to start small and as you build confidence increase the box height.

• Next, stand facing the box and set your feet hips width apart or slightly wider.

• Sit into a semi-squat position, brace your core and swing your arms backwards.

• Swing your arms forwards and simultaneously jump up and land on top of the box. Land with a soft bend in your knees, then stand up tall.

• Step off the box and repeat the movement.

Box jumps can be an intimidating exercise, especially if you’re not used to performing jumping movements. If you feel this way, begin small with a Soft Plyo Jump Box. This will help to build your confidence and also stop the chance of banging your shins during the jump. As your performance improves, you can increase the height with Stackable Plyo Box. If you’d prefer a more stable surface, then opt for a Wooden Plyo Box. The 3 in 1 boxes can be turned to vary your jump height so you can change up the exercise without buying new equipment.
