What is a women's Olympic barbell?
A women's Olympic barbell is a bar designed to International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) specifications for women’s weightlifting. It typically weighs 15kg, measures 201cm in length and has a 25mm grip diameter, making it slightly lighter and thinner than a standard 20kg Olympic barbell.
Are women's barbells only for women?
No. Despite the name, anyone can use a women's barbell. Many lifters prefer them because the lighter starting weight and smaller grip diameter can be easier to handle, especially for beginners or those with smaller hands. For more information, read our article on Are Women’s Barbells Just For Women?
Why does a women's barbell have a 25mm shaft?
The 25mm shaft is designed to provide a more comfortable grip for lifters with smaller hands. A narrower diameter can improve grip security during exercises such as cleans, snatches and deadlifts.
What weight plates fit a women's Olympic barbell?
Our women's Olympic barbells use 2 inch (50mm) Olympic sleeves and are compatible with Olympic weight plates and bumper plates.
Is a 15kg barbell good for beginners?
Yes. A 15kg barbell provides a lighter starting point than a 20kg bar, making it ideal for learning technique and progressing gradually in strength training.
Can I use a women's barbell for powerlifting?
Yes. Women's barbells can also be used for squats, deadlifts, presses and general strength training. However, competitive powerlifting usually uses a 20kg power bar, so competitors may wish to train with both types of bars.
Will a women's Olympic barbell fit my squat rack or power rack?
Yes. Most women's Olympic barbells are designed with the same distance between the sleeves as standard Olympic bars, allowing them to fit most power racks and squat racks.
What exercises can I do with a women's Olympic barbell?
Women's barbells can be used for squats, deadlifts, bench presses, overhead presses, rows, cleans, jerks and snatches, making them suitable for both strength training and Olympic lifting. Our Ultimate Full Body Barbell Workout is great for exercise ideas.
Is a women's barbell suitable for home gyms?
Yes. The slightly shorter length can make a women's Olympic barbell easier to use in compact training spaces while still remaining compatible with standard gym equipment.
How much weight can a women's Olympic barbell hold?
Load capacity varies by model, but high-quality women's barbells are designed to handle heavy training loads. Always check the bar's weight rating and tensile strength before use. Most of our women’s barbells are tested to 680kg.
Should I buy a women's barbell or a standard Olympic barbell?
A women's barbell may be the better choice if you prefer a lighter starting weight, have smaller hands or train Olympic lifts. A standard 20kg barbell may suit lifters who prefer a larger bar diameter or specifically want to train for powerlifting competitions.
