Mica Moore wearing a Team GB Olympic Bobsleigh uniform

There’s nothing more exciting than a new athlete joining the team here at Mirafit. What’s more impressive is when the athlete competes in two sports. We’re super excited to introduce our Mirafit athlete Mica Moore, sprinter and GB bobsleigh.

We had a chat with Mica to find out a bit more about how she began her career and what her training routine looks like for both sprinting and bobsleigh.

Tell us a bit about your journey to becoming a professional athlete

A lot of people would refer to me as a dual athlete because I do two sports, I get involved in a lot of other sports as well. I am a sprinter and a GB bobsleigh. I started sprinting when I was 15 and absolutely loved it. Luckily, I got to go to the commonwealth games in 2014 as part of the relay team. After the Commonwealth I wanted to progress in my sprinting career and make the senior GB teams, but I was ill after the games and unfortunately it knocked me out.

When did you decide to move into winter sports?

My dad is my coach, so after lots of conversations and tears we thought about another challenge. I had another friend in the bobsleigh team and he told me to come down for the trials. In summer of 2016 I went for bobsleigh trials doing plyo jumps, 60m sprint and a roll bob and from there I was invited back again and I became part of the team. It was a bonkers journey, but I’m really happy that it’s started now.

What type of strength training do you do for athletics and bobsleigh training?

In its basic form, sprinting and bobsleigh are similar. You need acceleration, speed and power which is why a lot of sprinters move over. However, when you get down to the technical side and the nitty gritty that’s where there are differences. I do bobsleigh training in winter and sprint training in summer. I really have to hone in on some elements to make sure I don’t get into bad habits when it comes to sprinting season.

I tend to do a lot of Olympic lifts such as clean and jerk, snatch and deadlifts because they are old school movements that work for my sport. I am a small person in bobsleigh so I need to work on improving my strength to size ratio. A bobsleigh weighs 190kg as a basic, it’s about moving as much weight as quickly as possible, so, when I hit a bobsleigh it doesn’t feel like I've gone into the back of a bus.

Also, I do a lot of plyometric training as well and I find that these two combined work really well.

How do you fit all your training into the week?

I train 6 days a week, but I really enjoy it. I have Sunday off and when I need to put in a gym session I double up that day. Gym training is 3 times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Monday is a pure acceleration day and I do sled runs. Wednesdays and Fridays are recovery days where I do accessory work such as bodyweight exercises.

I enjoy bodyweight exercises such as pistol squats and I try to utilise those so I have all round strength.

What is your favourite piece of Mirafit equipment for training?

If I go to a gym I’m like a child in a playground and try to go on with everything. The 15kg Barbell and Bumper Plates are a must. In lockdown when I didn't have a home gym I put my weights in the back of my car and would drive around with 100kg in my Fiat 500 whilst I was travelling and working for the euros 2020.

Plyo Jump Boxes and Dumbbells always come in handy and if I want to put in a nasty session then I’ll include some Battle Ropes.

What are your goals for 2022?

My goals have changed, I would have loved to go to the Winter Olympics, however I removed myself from the team before Christmas. But now I’ve got some really exciting opportunities ahead.

Now I’ve still got an outside chance of getting into the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Welsh athletics are really supportive of getting athletes to the games. I’ve had a great indoor season and I never thought I would run this well indoors after all the Bobsleigh training, it’s all gone really well. I’m 30 this year so I want to keep improving and enjoying the sport without putting too much pressure on myself. If I can get a relay vest in a GB sprint team that would be amazing.

Being part of the GB Bobsleigh team would be great. Being 30 in bobsleigh isn’t old so I still have plenty of time to progress. I’m still a baby in the sport, so I've got the motivation to continue there.

Inspired to start training like Mica? A great starting point in your strength training journey is to pick up an Olympic Weight Bar and a set of Olympic Weight Plates.
