Frequently Asked Questions

What exercises can I do with a 5ft axle bar?

A 5ft axle bar can be used for deadlifts, overhead press, floor press, bent over rows, bicep curls, front squats, Zercher squats, Romanian deadlifts, farmer-style holds and grip training. Its shorter length also makes it ideal for home gyms where space is limited.

Is this axle bar suitable for beginners?

Yes. While axle bars are more challenging than standard barbells, beginners can still benefit by using lighter weights. They're an excellent way to build grip strength, improve forearm endurance and introduce variety into strength training without needing specialist Strongman equipment.

Does this axle bar fit Olympic weight plates?

Yes. This axle bar has 50mm sleeves and is designed for use with all 2-inch Olympic weight plates. Olympic collars are required to secure the plates during training.

What's the difference between a 5ft and 7ft axle bar?

A 5ft axle bar is shorter, lighter and easier to store, making it ideal for garage gyms, smaller training spaces and higher-repetition workouts. A 7ft axle bar offers a wider grip position and more sleeve space for loading heavier weights, making it better suited to traditional Strongman training and commercial gym environments.

Can I use an axle bar in a power rack?

A 5ft axle bar is designed for free-weight training where space is limited rather than rack-based lifting. The short length will make it unsuitable for use with most racks. Our 7ft axle bar is a better choice if you want a bar that can also be used on a power rack.

Why doesn't this axle bar have knurling?

The smooth finish is intentional. Without knurling, your grip relies entirely on hand strength rather than the bar biting into your skin. This increases the training demand on your grip and forearms, making it more effective for grip-focused strength work.

Is a 5ft axle bar good for home gyms?

Yes. A 5ft axle bar takes up less storage space than a full-length barbell while still allowing a wide range of strength exercises. It's particularly well suited to garage gyms, garden gyms and compact training spaces.

Will the powder-coated finish scratch?

Yes. Like most powder-coated steel gym equipment, the finish may show cosmetic scratches if it comes into contact with metal racks, weight plates or other equipment. This is normal wear and does not affect the performance or structural integrity of the bar.

Is an axle bar worth buying?

An axle bar is worth buying if you want to improve grip strength, add variety to your training or prepare for Strongman events. Because the thicker 50mm diameter makes every lift more demanding, many lifters use an axle bar alongside a conventional Olympic bar rather than replacing it entirely. It's especially popular for deadlifts, overhead presses and grip-focused training.

Love this bar and use it for Zercher squats. The thickness of the bar is more comfortable to hold and I don’t need to use padding. No sleeve spin also is better for this exercise. Would recommend.

Very good quality equipment from Mirafit. Will definitely be recommending and using this company for all my equipment moving forward.

I love this bar for the thick grip. I don't specifically want to work on grip strength but I have fairly large hands/palms and find the standard olympic bar diameter uncomfortably narrow - I always find myself trying to use grip pads or other methods to 'pad out' the diameter, but all the workarounds I've tried have drawbacks. So this increased diameter is great. However I don't love that the grip isn't knurled - I'm not sure that making the bar slippy specifically helps with improving grip strength - I'd like to see knurling added. I also found the sleeve length a little short - its fine if you're lifting light or using thin metal plates but if you use wider bumper plates then you can swiftly run out of sleeve length for plates.

Great piece of kit! Takes your training to a whole other level. Prepare to drop the weight and ache in places you never knew you could ache! I’m using this bar for deadlifts and overhead press. Totally recommend this bar.

Had mine for 3 weeks now and got a few workouts in with my axle bar. It's a great bit of kit that adds that extra challenge for my strength training. I love that it's smooth which makes my grip work harder.

Good solid bar - limited weight capacity but have loaded it up to 160kg with tri grip 25kg plates. Won't fit many bumpers. Every time you load a plate on or off the bar it strips the powder coating to dust, so the ends are bare steel at this stage and a bit rusty. Doesn't bother me but could be an issue for some.
