What Equipment Do You Need for a Home Gym?
Whilst the equipment you will need depends on your training goals, you will want to consider
- Power rack – A versatile piece of equipment used for multiple exercises including squats and bench pressing. The spotters allow for heavier and safer training when lifting alone.
- Weight bench – gives you a sturdy surface on which to bench press and perform other prone exercises. Will often be used placed within the power rack. Consider if you need a flat bench or an adjustable one which can incline or decline.
- Barbell – a bar that you load individual plates on to. Used in squatting, bench pressing and bent over rows, as well as many other exercises. Comes in a variety of lengths and weights, so check the space you have available. You can also try our Barbell Recommendation Quiz
- Plates – the weighted discs that load on to a barbell. These can be bumper plates, which are typically rubber, or cast-iron plates, although other options are available.
- Dumbbells / kettlebells – Free weights that are used outside of the power rack and come in a variety of styles and weights. They can be used for compound movements or used to work a single muscle group.
- Cardio – Ideal for weight loss, calorie burning and improving cardiovascular fitness.
What else do I need to consider in my gym space?
Some garage gyms have limited head height; this will affect your ability to fit in some of the power racks or can make pull up bars difficult to use. In these situations, look out for short power racks or squat racks instead.
Flooring is also important. The correct rubber matting will protect your floor and your equipment whilst giving your space a professional look.
The equipment required for your home gym will depend on your goals. However, a power rack, weight bench, barbell, plates and some free weights would be required for starters for a well-stocked home gym alongside a cardio machine.
Kettlebells and dumbbells can be easily stored away within existing rooms and can take up very little space. For a dedicated gym area with a power rack set up in it, we would recommend a space at least 3m x 3m in order for you to be able to fit the equipment in and have adequate workout room and storage.
Whilst it is possible to build a home gym without a power rack, most strength training enthusiasts would consider it very important. The ability to squat and bench press with built in spotters and being able to add extras such as cable machines or dip handles means that you can get a full body workout.
We have designed our Home Gym Package to be the ultimate starting point for your home gym. The set includes power rack, weight bench, plates, cable system and landmine attachment. It has been designed to be compatible with our M1 attachments, so that it can grow with you.
