Frequently Asked Questions
Is 20mm rubber gym flooring thick enough for lifting weights?
Yes, 20mm rubber gym flooring is suitable for most home gyms and commercial fitness spaces. It provides excellent protection for cardio equipment, resistance machines, benches, dumbbells and general free weight training. If you regularly drop loaded barbells from above waist height or perform Olympic lifts, we recommend using 40mm rubber flooring instead, as it provides greater impact protection.
What floor can these gym mats be installed on?
These rubber gym mats can be installed on most solid, level surfaces including concrete, garage floors, timber subfloors and tiles. For the best results, the surface should be clean, dry and as level as possible before installation.
Can I cut the mats to fit around walls or equipment?
Yes. The mats can be cut to size using a sharp utility knife. We recommend scoring the rubber several times rather than trying to cut through in one pass. This makes it easier to achieve a clean edge.
Do I need to glue the mats to the floor?
In most gyms, no. When laid wall-to-wall in a brick pattern, the weight of the mats and gym equipment is usually enough to keep them securely in place. Optional connectors are also available to help minimise movement on larger installations. Glue is generally only required for certain commercial or permanent installations.
How many mats do I need for my gym?
Each pack of 2 covers 1 square metre, with two 100cm x 50cm tiles included. To calculate how many you'll need, measure the length and width of your gym in metres, multiply them together to find the total square metres, then round up to the nearest full pack. Check out our Mat Calculator for more help.
Will these mats reduce noise?
Yes. The dense SBR rubber helps absorb impact, reduce vibration and lower noise from exercise equipment and free weights. While they won't make weightlifting silent, they significantly reduce noise compared with training directly on concrete or hard flooring.
Are these mats suitable for a garage gym?
Absolutely. These mats are a popular choice for garage gyms because they help protect concrete floors, improve comfort underfoot and provide better grip during training. They are suitable for both home and commercial gym environments.
Do rubber gym mats smell?
Like most rubber flooring, new mats may have a noticeable rubber smell when first installed. This naturally fades over time, especially in well-ventilated spaces. Leaving doors or windows open during the first few days can help the smell dissipate more quickly.
Can I put a power rack on these mats?
Yes. These mats are suitable for supporting power racks, squat racks, weight benches and other heavy gym equipment. They help distribute weight more evenly and protect the floor underneath.
Are these mats waterproof?
The rubber itself is water resistant and easy to wipe clean. However, we recommend installing them on a dry surface and excess water should always be mopped up promptly, particularly in garages where moisture can build up underneath flooring.
How do I clean the mats?
Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and surface debris, then a damp cloth or mop with warm water to keep the surface clean. Avoid harsh solvents or bleach, which may damage the flooring. For more information see our maintenance guide for rubber gym flooring.
What's the difference between 20mm and 40mm gym mats?
20mm mats are ideal for general strength training, cardio equipment, functional fitness and resistance machines. 40mm mats are designed for heavier lifting and repeated high-impact barbell drops, making them the better option for Olympic lifting platforms or very heavy deadlifting.
