Frequently Asked Questions
Is 40mm rubber flooring thick enough for deadlifts?
A 40mm rubber gym mat is suitable for most home and commercial weightlifting, including deadlifts, Olympic lifting and heavy free weights when installed over a solid subfloor such as concrete. The thick rubber helps absorb impact, reduce noise and protect both flooring and equipment. For extremely heavy lifting or repeated overhead drops, a dedicated lifting platform may provide additional protection.
What flooring can these gym mats be installed on?
These mats can be installed over concrete, garage floors and many other solid, level surfaces. If installing over finished flooring such as laminate, hardwood or vinyl, it's worth checking the flooring manufacturer's recommendations, as some rubber products can mark certain floor finishes over long periods. A suitable protective underlay can help minimise this risk.
How many mats do I need for my gym?
Each pack contains two 100cm x 50cm mats, covering a total area of 1 square metre. Measure the length and width of your training area in metres, multiply them together to calculate the total floor area, then order the required number of square metres. For irregular spaces, allow a little extra for trimming around walls or equipment. Check our Mat Calculator for more help.
Can I cut the mats to fit around walls or equipment?
Yes. The mats can be cut to size using a sharp utility knife. We recommend scoring the rubber several times rather than trying to cut through in one pass. This makes it easier to achieve a clean edge.
Are 40mm gym mats suitable for commercial gyms?
Yes. These heavy-duty rubber mats are designed for home gyms, PT studios and commercial training facilities. The thick rubber construction helps withstand regular use while reducing impact noise and protecting floors.
Do rubber gym mats reduce noise?
Yes. Thick rubber flooring helps absorb vibrations and significantly reduces noise compared to lifting directly on concrete or hard flooring. While no flooring completely eliminates sound from dropped weights, 40mm mats provide excellent noise reduction for most strength training.
Can I put a squat rack or power rack directly on these mats?
Yes. These mats are suitable for placing power racks, squat racks, benches and other strength equipment on top. The thick rubber helps distribute weight while protecting the floor beneath.
Will these mats stop my floor from being damaged?
These mats are designed to protect floors from scratches, dents and impact caused by gym equipment and weights. While they provide excellent protection for most training, the level of protection also depends on the underlying floor and the amount of weight being dropped.
Do I need connectors or adhesive?
In many home gyms, the weight of the mats is enough to keep them securely in place when laid in a brick pattern. For larger installations or areas where movement may occur, compatible connectors can help keep the mats aligned. Adhesive is generally not required unless you want a permanent installation.
Do rubber gym mats smell when new?
Like many rubber flooring products, new mats may have a noticeable rubber smell when first unpacked. This is normal and typically fades after a short period, especially if the mats are aired in a well-ventilated space before installation.
How do you clean rubber gym flooring?
Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and surface debris, then a damp cloth or mop with warm water to keep the surface clean. Avoid harsh solvents or bleach, which may damage the flooring. For more information see our maintenance guide for rubber gym flooring.
Should I choose 20mm or 40mm rubber gym mats?
20mm mats are ideal for general fitness equipment, cardio machines and lighter weight training. 40mm mats provide greater impact absorption and are a better choice for heavy lifting, Olympic weightlifting, functional fitness and areas where weights may be dropped.
