Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install rubber gym matting directly onto concrete?
Yes. Rubber gym matting can usually be laid directly onto concrete without adhesive. Concrete provides a stable base, making it ideal for home and commercial gyms. Simply ensure the floor is clean, dry and level before laying the mats. For best results, install the tiles in a staggered brick pattern to minimise movement.
Will rubber gym flooring protect my floor from dropped weights?
Rubber gym flooring helps absorb impact and protects floors from everyday strength training. For general weightlifting and free weights, 20mm matting offers excellent protection. If you regularly perform Olympic lifts or drop loaded barbells from above waist height, 40mm matting is recommended for increased impact absorption.
Can I use this gym matting in a garage gym?
Yes. Rubber gym matting is one of the most popular flooring choices for garage gyms because it protects the concrete floor, reduces noise and vibration, and provides a durable, non-slip training surface. It's suitable for power racks, benches, cardio equipment and free weights.
Does rubber gym matting reduce noise?
Yes. Rubber flooring helps dampen vibration and reduces impact noise from weights and gym equipment. While no flooring can eliminate noise completely, thicker rubber matting significantly reduces sound compared with training directly on concrete, tiles or laminate flooring.
Can I put a squat rack on rubber gym matting?
Yes. Rubber gym flooring is designed to support heavy gym equipment, including squat racks, power cages and half racks. The matting provides a stable surface while helping protect the floor underneath from concentrated loads and equipment movement.
Can I use rubber gym flooring under a treadmill or rowing machine?
Yes. Rubber gym flooring is ideal beneath cardio equipment like treadmills, exercise bikes, rowing machines and cross trainers. It helps protect the floor from scratches, reduces vibrations and can improve stability during workouts.
Does rubber gym flooring have a smell?
New rubber flooring may have a temporary rubber odour when first installed. This is normal and gradually fades with ventilation and regular use. Opening windows or allowing the mats to air before installation can help the smell dissipate more quickly.
Can rubber gym mats be used on wooden floors?
Yes. Rubber gym matting helps protect wooden, laminate and engineered flooring from scratches, dents and vibrations caused by gym equipment and weights. Always ensure the floor is clean before installation and avoid trapping moisture underneath the mats.
How do I clean rubber gym flooring?
Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and surface debris, then a damp cloth or mop with warm water to keep the surface clean. Avoid harsh solvents or bleach, which may damage the flooring. For more information see our maintenance guide for rubber gym flooring.
Do I need to glue rubber gym flooring down?
In most home gyms, no adhesive is required. The weight of the rubber tiles usually keeps them securely in place. For larger commercial installations or areas with heavy traffic, connectors or adhesive may be beneficial depending on the layout.
How many rubber gym mats do I need?
Measure the length and width of your training area in metres and multiply them together to calculate the total square metres. Since each mat covers 1 square metre, the number of mats required is generally equal to the total floor area.
